TAX
CONSULTING-
AND NOTHING
ELSE!
Michael Atlas is a Toronto-based Chartered Accountant who practices as an independent consultant on a wide range of Canadian tax matters. Tax consulting is his only business - he has specialized in tax for over 30 years!
In addition, he is one of Canada's most highly regarded authors of tax-related works. His extensive writings include two leading books for CCH Canadian Limited, which is Canada's most respected publisher of such works, as well as dozens of articles for various CCH publications.
A FOCUS ON DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TAX PLANNING !
The many domestic tax issues on which he focuses include such key areas as:
- Estate & inheritance planning

- General corporate & business tax matters
- Real estate tax issues
- Corporate reorganizations
- Mergers & acquisitions
In addition to advising on a wide variety of domestic tax issues, his practice places special emphasis on international tax planning, including especially:

- Other immigration & emigration issues, as well as tax residency determination
- Investment by non-residents in Canadian real estate
- Investment by Canadian residents in U.S. real estate

- Offshore corporations & trusts and the use of tax havens
- Tax treaty issues
He is also a U.S. Certified Public Accountant-as such, he has a special interest in Canada/U.S. cross-border tax issues!
The target markets for his services comprise two basic categories:
Accounting and law firms
Most of Michael Atlas's services are provided to or on behalf of accounting and law firms. Such firms call on him when they encounter tax issues that are beyond their level of expertise.
Perhaps the best testimonial to Michael Atlas' talents and reputation as a tax advisor is the fact that most of his clients are other Chartered Accountants, and most of his business consists of tax consulting work provided to other firms of Chartered Accountants. That is, since the time he formed his independent practice in 1991, he has provided consulting services to more than 300 small and medium-sized accounting firms. (Unlike Big-4 and other larger firms, such firms normally do not have in-house tax specialists). These firms are in all parts of Ontario (and even some as far away as Victoria B.C. or Fredericton, N.B.).
These firms recognize that, when it comes to complex tax issues that are beyond the scope of a general practitioner's usual expertise, it is always best to consult an accountant or lawyer who specializes in tax. These firms also know enough to be able to determine who has top-level ability and who does not. Many of these firms would not dream of advising regarding a complex or unusual tax matter without first seeking input from Michael Atlas.
Others
Michael Atlas is also willing to provide direct consulting services to investors, entrepreneurs, estate administrators, private corporations, immigrants, emigrants, and Canadian subsidiaries of multi-national corporations.
Such services can be provided with the involvement and input of the clients' normal accounting or legal advisors if the client desires, or, alternatively, those other professionals can be left out of the picture. It is totally up to the client!
In addition, unlike many tax professionals in Canada, Michael Atlas is quite happy and able to provide consulting services to clients in all parts of the world exclusively via e-mail. He has done it on hundreds of occasions for many years now with great success. Some of his best clients are those he has and will never lay eyes on! There is never any need for a client to go to the time and trouble of meeting with him unless that client desires to do so.
However, it should be understood that Michael Atlas does not provide tax-preparation or other tax compliance services.
